Consultants, internal auditors and external auditors serve very different roles in a data center project, and all of them being vital to the project. A consultant for a data center project cannot be the auditor for the same project. An internal auditor can serve as an external auditor but only for organizations other than the one where they are employed to ensure impartiality. Below is a short description of the various roles and some of the high level requirements.
Consultants / CTDC
A consultant provides professional advice to companies who wish to achieve conformity to the requirements of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard. In a data center build project, consultants could serve a variety of roles such as technical advisor, designer, implementer, project manager and other important roles.
A TIA-942 certified consultant carries the CTDC (Certified TIA-942 Design Consultant) credential.
Internal Auditor / CTIA
An internal auditor is an individual who helps an organization, which could be the organization where the internal auditor is employed or another organization, to get their data center ready for conformity certification to the ANSI/TIA-942 standard. This individual understands the complete audit cycle and is able to help the organization to assess at the very least, the major non-conformities and ensure that all documentation and resources for the external certification audit are well prepared and allocated.
A TIA-942 certified internal auditor carries the CTIA (Certified TIA-942 Internal Auditor) credential.
External Auditor / CTEA
An external auditor is an individual who is external to the organization that wants its data center to be assessed for conformity to the ANSI/TIA-942. The auditor understands the full technical requirements of the standard in detail, understands the audit process and is skilled in seeking evidence for conformity verification. The external auditor is able to write a non-conformity report and review the potential fixes of the non-conformities.
A TIA-942 certified external auditor carries the CTEA (Certified TIA-942 External Auditor) credential.
Consulting / Audit Company
Consulting / Audit companies are companies providing consulting and/or audit services. For those companies offering both services to a data centre, it is important to ensure that the external auditor is not the same individual as the consultant. The external auditor is also not allowed to work for, or be related to, the company under the scope of the audit to ensure proper impartiality.
